Hi. We brought our newborn home yesterday. She is 5 days old. She was very distressed yesterday from 3pm onwards (wind). We left hosp at 5pm. She has been up most of the night with wind although cat napped and fed in 10 min intervals. We have had wet nappies.

She has now been asleep since about 4.30am. Should we leave her to sleep or waken her for a feed? My instinct says leave her.

Midwife due today at some point.

Congratulations. I would consider feeding her now as its been 5 hours. Thats quite a long time for a newborn to go between feeds and they only have tiny little stomachs.

I'm afraid I'm not sure if there's a right or wrong answer. My DS IS NOW 5 weeks old and I had exactly the same issue. He fell asleep at 3 and was still sleeping at half 7. We left him to sleep. When he did wake he was inconsolable. But that might just have been him.
One midwife said not to let him sleep for more than 3 hours between feeds. Another said never wake a sleeping baby.
I would say go with your instincts because it's your baby.

Have you managed to feed lying down at all? If so, could you take her into your bed and try feeding her without her really waking up? Or are you not (quite understandably) at that stage yet?

Leave her.

Never wake a sleeping baby.

If she's hungry, she'll let you know. She won't come to any harm by going without a feed.

She'll be exhausted from being up/stressed.

Get a brew and enjoy the peace for a few mins. Shell be up shortly, starving probably.Wink

Dont worry x

How you getting on star ?

stargirl1701 · 10/09/2012 12:53

We phoned the hosp. They advised making the room daytime - light, noise, change of temp. She woke in 5 min Grin

Changed dirty nappy, two feeds, now sleeping again.

Thank you all for your support. Just knowing you're all here is stopping us from panicking. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I'm in the always wake them if it's been more than 3 hours without a feed in the daytime camp. It all depends whether you're a control freak or not Blush.

You'll find your feet in time. Congrats!
