baby just crawled off bed and smacked head on wood floor! help!!

Dd 10 months was playing on the bed and I turned around and she crawled off the bed and smacked her head on the wood floor!! She was hysterical for about 5 mins and is now playing and smiling. I feel. like a. TERRIBLE mum! Shall I take her to a&e??

Hi Glitter, the same thing happened to my DD on the weekend. DH put her on the bed, turned around for a second and she lurched over the edge. He was so upset. Luckily we have a carpeted floor and DH didn't think that she banged her head too hard.
We checked her over once she was calmer, to look for any signs of pain/ bruising. Then just kept a close eye on her for the next hour or so. This accident didn't coincide with nap/bed time, but if it had, i would have kept her awake during this time, if possible, to look out for unusual levels of drowsiness/consciousness.
We felt that she was behaving as normal, so didn't take to A&E. She was happily playing shortly after. No ill effects but we've had a bit of a wake up call.
I hope that your DD is ok. You know her usual behaviour, so if there's anything out of the ordinary, then it's probably be worth getting her checked over.

No, just about every baby has done this at some point. Just watch her, I'm sure she'll be fine, babies are tough thank God

How high is the bed?

Mine rolled off the bench in the swimming pool on to the hard changing room floor. I felt bad about that one.

Don't worry mine did exactly the same thing, I turned around to get some clothes out of my wardrobe and next thing I hear is a thump and find Dd lying face down on the wooden floor.... She also cried for about 5minutes and then just got on with it.

You are not a bad mother i am sure it happens to most people.

They all do it. Keep an eye in her, but generally they bounce at that age.

They all do it - 8mo DD went head first off the bed the other day for the first time and yes, she pretty much bounced . Have a feel for any lumps or bumps on her head and, if you spot any, give them a tiny prod to see if they still hurt. We thought DD might have broken her nose, she landed with all her weight on it, but within a few minutes we were able to touch it and wiggle it side to side and she didn't react at all. And yes, keep her awake for a bit. But if she is happy, smiling and playing then she is probably fine. You're not a terrible mother, they all do it at some point!

Both of mine did it too. Stay calm and keep an eye on her for any sign that something is wrong and forgive yourself.

It is astonishing how much a baby can move and I'm sure every parent gets surprised one day by their baby reaching, rolling, shuffling towards some danger.

Good thisng is you will know now to not leave her alone on a bed or sofa and it won't happen again.

My flew off the sofa when my Dnan was watching him for 5 mins. She was more upset than he was!

All of my babies have done this and been fine, dd just last week. I think the advice they give for head injuries is if she vomits persistently, vomits twice in an hour, is un rousable then you need to bring her to A&E, yu can google head injury advice though and it will give you the list.

Mine have both done it. First time,I took DS to A&E. Doctor who saw us told me that crying is a good sign. This event also encouraged me to do a paediatric first aid course.

Don't bother with A&E unless she shows any ill effects. I was super-careful paranoid with my babies, but dd still fell down stairs at 18 months, and dd2 fell out of a swing. Both cried hysterically straight away - when dd2 fell out of the swing, I was with a dr friend who just told me to keep an eye on her. When dd1 fell downstairs, I was so ashamed I didn't tell anyone for weeks!

But he has: tipped a hot drink on his head; climbed into the toilet; fallen off a chair onto the wooden floor; tripped up concrete steps and banged his head... Most of which has occurred whilst I'm stood right next to him and just haven't gotten there in time [much less smug]

Thank you all so much. She stopped crying after 5 mins ate breakfast and has played laughed and acted normal this morning. Still worried though :-( the bed is about knee high but it was the impact on the wooden floor that scared me.
Its her nap time now, is it okay to put her down for a nap 2 hrs after she banged her head?

I sat her on the step, and she decided that she wanted to be on the floor instead. I only turned around for a second, and BANG!

you have to comfort, distract, make sure no visible bumps (although that's probably more reassuring in some ways!), rub arnica on the area, and then keep an eye out for at least an hour for floppiness, boz-eyed, extreme grumpiness, unconsciousness.

If the is eating, playing, babbling away normally then she is most likely fine. Look out for eyes not focussing, signs of headache or nausea, vomiting, or being off colour (use your mum radar here). Babies aren't called 'bouncing' for nothing! I was dropped off the side of the top of a slide when I was little (1970s, so no health and safely councy rubber surfaces!).

I would put her down for a nap as its been a while since the fall, but if you are worried then maybe have her sleep next to/on you on the sofa, or wait till she's fallen asleep and sit in the nursery with her and read? That way you can keep an eye on her. (Oh, and DD fell a lot further from that, our bed is higher, knee-high isn't too bad a fall).

Done it as well, plus left a baby gate open and DS1 fell down the stairs. I felt, still feel, awful.

I agree with Squirrellywoo's advice but if you are unsure call your GP and they will talk you through it and any signs to watch out for. I was advised to look out for more sleepiness than usual but keep to normal sleeps.

It happened to my son when he was that age,he cried for about 5mins was absolutely fine in his self until a few days later a big bubble appeared on his head where he banged it took him straight to a & e where he had an X-ray and he had a fractured skull and we actually got told off by the Dr for not taking him in straight away.not trying to scare you just saying babies don't always bounce
