Should I call DD (3yr ) while we are away for 11 days?

We are going on honeymoon and DD aged 3.3 yrs is staying with my mum for 11 nights. My mum has looked after DD before (occasionally) for 24 - 36 hours and I do usually speak to DD on phone about 3 times while away (because I miss her). This time we will be in Cuba so 5 hrs behind and expensive to call. Should I call DD regularly or will it upset her? Anyone have any experience/ views?

Will you explain your absence in advance to dd? If so, why not ask her if she'd like to speak to you on the phone when you're away? Does your dd talk to anyone on the phone now? At that age, my dd didn't want to speak on the phone to anyone, but your dd may be different.

Or maybe you could send an email that your mum could read to her? Will you be calling to check how things are going in your absence? If so, you could see if she wants to speak.

Have fun - I've never been to Cuba. It sounds great.

DD regularly speaks to her dad, her step brothers, her aunt and her grandparents. She ses phone as part of her communication repertoire.

DD is used to us being at work so we were going to say that we were at work. She understands that Mummy's always come back from work. Our mobiles won't work in cuba, there will be phone in hotel room but I am so used to having text facility it will be odd to be without. To buy a tri-band phone (I cannot get a free up-grade) is £210! so email is a good suggestion.

maybe you could find an internet cafe with webcams?

(i have no idea if internet cafes have webcams or not, far less if they do in cuba!)

but an e mail sounds great

enjoy your honeymoon
