Inviting friends over for 9 yr old DSS

Question from DP really.

My 9 yr old DSS lives about 2 hours drive from us so consequently DP is not known by the school parents from collecting and dropping off at school. Things have not been amicable with his ex either so it is possible they have heard negative things about DP.

DSS sadly has not really ever made many friends but now seems to have developed a friendship with a boy in his class and has started to meet up with him outside school, has been to a couple of sleep overs and day trips in the holiday etc.

DP would like to encourage this friendship and perhaps take both boys out (initially in their local area). If DSS wanted then it might be nice if the friend might one day come and stay overnight for a day or so.

Usually, you have some idea about your DC's friends parents and we are wondering how an invite from a strange dad you had never met might go down?

How would people approach this and what would you think? Are we just being over sensitive to the problem?

Yes that was something we thought about - perhaps leaving a note for DSS to put in his school bag for his friend with our contact details and suggesting we take the friend out for lunch. We thought we could add that they would be very welcome to join us either for coffee before or for the entire lunch. That would leave it open for them to join us if they wanted?

How would that sound?

Good, glad we're not completely out of tune! Pizza Express sounds about right to us too.

Thanks :)
