What age to start using toddler bed?

Hello!! My DS is 2.1 years and still in his cot at the mo as he's not sleeping through the night. I'm 17 weeks pregnant and would love to get him sleeping in his own bed by the time baby is here to make things a bit easier. Any suggestions or tips?

I only moved my DSs once they started climbing out of the cot, which was at about 2 - 2.6. I had a 2 year gap between DS1 and DS2 and DS2 didn't actually need the cot until he grew out of his carry cot, so there's not too much hurry. The problem with a cot bed is that they can get out of it and go wandering, but once they climb out of the cot, you have that problem anyway!

Yeah my DS hasn't quite reached that stage yet but he won't be long!!! I thought maybe it would be nice to get him a nice bed and decorate his bedroom in a theme he loves to make the idea more appealing to him. We have a baby gate at the top of our stairs so there's no danger if he does go wandering. Do u think he's maybe too young to put in a bed?

We had a cot bed, think we took the sides off for DS when I was pg with DD and couldn't face lifting him in and out anymore (prob about the same age as your DS).

He then moved to a single bed which we already had in his room for a spare when my mum came to stay. He didn't seem troubled at all that the baby was going into his old cot...

DD was 2 1/2 when she went into a bed. A couple of months before we took the side off her cot, which she strangely didn't like but she happily went into a bed though.
