Reducing quality of Terries

Has anybody else noticed how newer Terries do not seem as thick or absorbent as the much older ones even though the older ones have had much more use? I've been going on for some time to DH about how much better our remaining Harringtons nappies are than newer ones from Boots, John Lewis, Zorbit and Mothercare. (With 5 we've tried them all!!) Some of the Harringtons ones are on their second generation, others were bought for DS1.

At the weekend DH, probably fed up with my wittering, and believing that the newer ones must be better because they'd had so much less use, weighed some samples after washing and a very gentle spin. He weighed them again when they were dry and had to concede that the Harringtons ones (bought for DS1) appeared to absorb much more - about 20% more - than the Zorbit Supreme which seemed to be the best of the rest of the 60cm ones. We also have some KosiKare 50 cm and 75 cm ones which he doscovered are actually proportionally quite a bit more absorbent than the rest but I know they do not have the lovely softness of the Harringtons ones and do not wash to the same whiteness even with exactly the same treatment - and, in the case of the bigger ones, very rarely seeing a poo.
