18 month old still not sleeping through the night

My ds is 18 mo and is yet to sleep through the night. I settle him around 8pm with a warm milk bottle and he falls asleep in my arms. I then put him in his cot in his own room and all is fine with settling him. He wakes at least 3 times a night every night. Can someone please give me some tips on helping him sleep through the night.
He does have a nap during the day usually from 11am - 1pm but even when he doesn't have a nap its still the same. Any tips will be greatfully received.

If he falls asleep in your arms its quite possible he wakes fully after a sleep cycle because he's not in your arms. Separation anxiety is huge around this age. There's also a big sleep regression (I know you say he's never slept through but it could be part of it) and development happening around 18-21 months. I'll try and find some links

Sorry I meant you could try and see if he'll fall asleep in his cot with you there. DS has just started to do this after a feed, I put him in the cot and play an Adele CD which he loves.

here is some info on the development stuff going on at this age, and here is some info on sleep regression :)
