Finaly gave in to the xbox and xbox live. My eldest is off to high school and his opinion was that with xbox live he would beable to eep in touch with his friends who are going to other high schools.

It kinda made sense - we don't live near his school friends, we moved alot with work and still relatively new to the area so I feel guilty about him loosing anyone.

Everything was fine he befriended school friends on xbox live - they do game matches etc, they have the headsets so can jabber on etc so all good there.

Found hes befriended people he doesn't know though. He says they say are around ages 9-12 (hmmmm).

My initial thought is 'NO WAY'. People only that he knows in real life. However a friend has put it another way. That unfortunatly we are in an age were social networking is a big part of peoples lives and the rules are being made up as we all go along and, 'is it so bad if he makes new friends from anywhere and everywhere (his friends list had a kid from germany one from US and others around the UK).

This xbox live stuff is all new to me. I admittedly panicd thinking the worse and deleted his unknown friends put up the security settings so i vito everything but can't help feeling after what m friend said that maybe im an old fart whose in the dark ages.

Any thoughts on this would be much welcomed

Does he play where you can't see him? Does he have headphones on all the time? I'm all for technology but you have the duty and right to keep him safe. Maybe you could just do a few 'surprise' inspections and if there's anything dodgy it's removed. It kind of depends what he's playing too. It may be a good chance for you to talk about internet safety with him.
Hope the ramblings help, I haven't had to have this conversation yet!

there is good and bad in everything....my DS has come across others on-line with xbox live that deliberately provoke, harrass and ruin game play....we have reported these people through the xlive account options....

My DS has friends he plays with regularly and it is unfortunate that sometimes they will get a friend request and accept it and let a person into their game...only to find that this is someone deliberately there to cause trouble....

It's easy enough to get rid of them though....you have to ensure that your DC knows not to get too involved with these people if trouble starts...just unfriend and ignore them....move to another game party for a while is best way to deal with it.

It has been pretty unpleasant at times though....
