19 month age gap, should i get another cot?

DD is 13 months at the mo, DC2 is due in January when she will be 19 months.

The people i have spoken to say i should get DD a toddler bed and get her settled in there before the new baby comes along but this seems ridiculous to me as shes tiny and isnt walking yet.

DC2 will probably be in a moses basket for a while im guessing (although DD wouldnt contemplate sleeping in it and went very happily into her cot at 8 weeks) so could i delay it until shes older, say nearly 2, or should i just get the new baby a new cot?

I will have this quandary next year when newborn arrives and DS will be 18 months. I am planning a toddler bed for when newborn is out of Moses basket & into cot. Not too ridiculous as they have sides not unlike a cot and I expect DS to be walking by then.

Will reassess next year though when I may have totally changed my mind :o

Use the Moses basket for as long as you can then move dd into a proper bed. Don't bother with a toddler bed or second cot - needless waste of money.

My dd1 moved into a bed at 2.2 and my niece moved at 18 months with no bother (though they did both need a little plastic step to climb into bed Grin)

I've got 19months between my youngest two, now 23 months and 4 months. Toddler is in his cot in his room and baby in Moses basket in our room.

There's no way he's ready for a bed, will just buy a second cot for DD when she outgrows the Moses basket and put DS3 in bed when he's ready Smile

I have 17 months between my dds. We moved dd1 into a proper single bed (not a toddler bed) at about 14 months to free up the cot ready for dd2. I thought it would be better to do it before the new baby arrived as I didn't want her to feel like the baby was taking over her cot and wasn't sure how quickly I'd need to move the baby out of the moses basket.

DD1 wasn't walking when she went into her big bed but it didn't matter and I actually found it much easier to lift her in and out of a bed when heavily pregnant than lifting her into the cot. It also meant she never did the constant climbing out of bed thing that most of my friends' children did when they first went into a bed.

As it turned out dd2 hated the cot, hardly slept in it and we eventually gave up and put her into a big bed as well at the age of 9 months!

We just moved ds1 to his 'big boy bed' a few months after ds2 made an appearance. He was quite chuffed to give his 'baby' cot to ds2. I like those extendable ikea beds - start as toddler beds and then add extra bits on

18 months between mine and we contemplated a single bed so DS2 could have the cot, so glad we didn't and PIL kindly bought us a new cotbed. DS1 is 2.1 and would be wondering around not going to sleep and DS2 didn't fit in the moses basket at 4 weeks old so he went into the cotbed! He's now almost 7mo and sleeps in there just fine. Depends also on how much of a wriggler your DC1 is, mine shuffles up and down the cot, moves everything, has 5 teddies in there and would not do well in a bed!

Eventually we will have 2 cotbeds converted to toddler beds then maybe single beds when they are older.

we had a 17 month age gap between dc3 and 4 and again a 17 month age gap between dc 4 and 5 . We used a moses basket for 3 months then put the toddler into a bed (with a stair gate on the door to the bedroom). So we didnt need to buy a new cot.

Although as a side note we did need to buy a new cot after dh manage to snap the side off trying to move the old one with dc5 Grin Angry

23 months between my first 2 and we got a second cot. Never occurred to me not to.

DD1 went into a full size bed at 18 months no bother. Just had bed guards on each side.

Hi,

I have 3DC and there is only 20 months between my youngest 2, i put DD into a bed and passed the cot on to my DS it worked out VERY well, DS loves his cot and DD feels very grown up in her big girl bed.

Good luck.

bagpuss · 08/08/2012 13:33

22 months between our first two and we had a cotbed for ds1 when dd1 was born as it was exactly the same price as a toddler bed and gave us the option to leave the sides on or off. I was glad we had it in the end as ds1 only started using it as a bed when he was 2.4 so we had a few months use from it as a cot.

Thanks for your replies, still undecided but got until Jan to make our minds up so no hurry.
