Is it just me that thinks this is very strange?

I met a lady at play group today who has a 10m DS. She said she stopped bf at 2m but every now and again lets her DS suck on her boob to comfort himself or to fall asleep.
She said it is because she hates dummies and doesn't want him sucking his thumb. She is sure she is not producing milk any more and said it is only one or two times a week he does this.
I have never heard of anyone doing this before and have worked with children all my life.
Does any one else think this is a bit strange?

My DS liked to do that.

I'm sure he got nothing but comfort out of it and he, too, disliked a dummy.

why is it strange? only part of the point of BFing is the milk bit, the rest is comfort, skin to skin and the neurological benefits of sucking

nothing strange about a 10mo having a bit of boob comfort
(although personally as BF tailed off I found "dry sucking" painful!)

why strange?

No. Lots of mothers and babies breastfeed for the comfort and bonding as much as for the nutritional and immunological benefits.

I think it's a bit odd too, but what harm will it do? Each to their own.

aesopslabials · 24/07/2012 21:44

why on earth would it be strange and instead shoving a piece of rubber and plastic in his mouth be seen as ok? :-o
it is biologically normal.

IHaveAFeatureWallAndILikeIt · 24/07/2012 21:45

She might be producing tiny amounts, therefore unable to express and prove it. But as others said its comfort and what babies are meant to do.

MIL used to tell me that DS used me as a dummy, as if dummies were the natural default option!

chipmonkey · 24/07/2012 22:42

Didn't you know that dummies grow on trees and are the natural biological norm for new babies to receive comfort? Until these crazy women came along and started putting their big fake breasts into babies' mouths?

Dry nursing. I did this in the few weeks of pregnancy with my 2nd DC when milk dried up. Dd continued to be nursed to sleep. She thought all her Christmases had come at once when my milk came in again. In answer to your question no I don't think it strange.

I've never BF but when ds was tiny i did think about sticking my boob in his mouth to see if that would make him sleep.

CinnabarRed · 25/07/2012 09:25

I do this. I gave up BF when I went back to work, but DS3 had different ideas! I'd actually be delighted if my milk came back, but I don't do it often enough for that.

I have to admit at first reading of this but since reading the replies i can see the thinking and reasons for it, although i personally wouldnt do it, not now my DD is 14 months. beside i didnt bf for long as i found it too painfull
