Dropping milk when weaning

Hi all,

I'm just after some advice on milk intake when weaning please. My lo is 6 and a half months and I've been weaning him for 3 weeks now. He loves it! He has 5 bottles a day and I give him a fruit purée with porridge after his 2nd bottle and a veg purée after his 4th bottle. I know it is natural for their milk intake to decrease but I'm just gettin concerned that its dropping too much. He is a big boy, weighed in yesterday at 20lb 4oz, and has normally taken in about 35oz milk a day. This is now dropping to about 25oz a day and each day he wants less and less so I think it's going to drop further. Because he was a little premature I don't want to introduce meat and dairy until he is 6 months from his due date which isn't for another couple of weeks. So i'm just worried that his iron intake isn't enough at the moment.

What do you think and what have you experienced?

Thanks!

I can;t remember how much mine used to drink but never as much as 35 ozs!
I think you need to go by what your baby is telling you - offer milk with breakfast and a bottle in the evening, maybe another small bottle with lunch. Offer iron rich foods too now, so green veg, and also add in some cheese or youghurt so he is also getting calcium that way.
My children dropped their daytime bottles very quickly after weaning and we increased the food intake rapidly. They still have milk at breakfast and before bed.
Try not to get too hung up on everything - relax and let him guide you.

a minimum of 20oz is recommended between 6 months and 1 year. I gave meals in between milk feeds to try and maintain an adequate milk intake e.g. give milk and then give food an hour or so later

Mine is just over 6 months and I started weaning a couple of weeks ago. 35oz isnt that much tbh my below 50th centile girlie was taking 40oz a day by 51/2 months Shock. Her milk consumption has gone down to about 200ml 4 times a day. I think 5 bottles is quite a lot and I would try to cut 1 (eventually 2) out.

FWIW I think they take what they take, my other one never drank as much and really took to solids quickly. I could never get 20oz down her after 6 months and you cant make them have it. The health visitor just told me to put formula milk in food and give her yoghurt etc. They never seemed that concerned and she's a perfectly healthy 3 year old!

To put it in perspective I'm 35 and was put onto cows milk at 6 months!
