8 week old and antibiotics

My 8 week old has had a cold for four weeks. He is absolutely fine during the day and very happy and content, but once he has been in his cot for a while the mucus builds at the back of his nose and he struggles to breathe comfortably through the night. We're using saline nose drops and snufflebabes, but I took him back to the doctor today after he brought up some mucus with his milk for the first time on monday evening. The gp has prescribed antibiotics which i'm reluctant to give him - it's a 7 day course and on day 8 he will be due for his first immunisation. I didn't air my concerns with the gp (a locum, as my doctor is on leave) and I know I should have, but I just feel he isn't that bad to warrant antibiotics at his age (apart from the length of time he's been poorly). Of course I'm not a doctor, so I don't know if I'm doing the right thing or not. I've collected the prescription and it's in the fridge, I'm just reluctant to use it. Thoughts please?

does the GP think he has an infection?
sounds slightly bizarre, and like you i would probably not use them...

she said he could have an infection in his nose, but she also said it could be an allergy. His chest was checked and is clear. If it's an allergy then antibiotics aren't going to help, are they? I know I should have discussed it more with her, but i felt we were being rushed, he was hungry, i was hot and bothered...glad you agree, thanks for taking the time to respond

no, an allergy wouldn't need antibiotics

as for the snuffly-ness have you tried raising one end of his cot slightly? you can roll a blanket up and put under the mattress just to keep his head up a bit which might help
