3 year old given up dummy, won't settle to sleep?

My 3 year old DS gave up his dummy (voluntarily) last week. Since then he struggles to go to sleep. No crying, just up in his room playing, reading books, trying on his clothes! Last night he didn't fall asleep till after 10. If he wakes in the night he has the same problem, becoming more tired during the day. Often he will try a get a crafty nap in in the car.
I really don't want him to have another sleep crutch and we have a reasonable bed time routine.
Anyone else experienced anything similar? Any ideas?

DD2 gave up her dummy just a while ago, when she turned 3. She did have trouble settling herself at bedtime for around 2 to 3 weeks but is fine now, goes to sleep by herself. I did have to stay with her for the first few nights and gradually withdraw from the room over the next few nights.

I stopped DD of 23months using her dummy about two months ago. This prevented her for going to sleep on time. Her bed time is at 830pm but it takes her Ihr to I.5hr before falling asleep. With the dummy she used to fall asleep within 30mins. I think it is a common problem with stoping the use of dummies.

Thanks, hoping it is sorted before he starts school in September. He slept better last night with a blackout blind up, either that or he was so exhausted from a week of sleep deprivation! Thanks Faries it is good to know it may sort itself out in a few weeks.
