someone tell me it will end at some point. DS is 4 months and still up for 2 feeds during the night with no end in sight. It seems everyone i know has a baby that sleeps through the night. He is the only baby at mother and toddlers his age still up twice a night so they say.

They lie! At 4 months I would expect twice a night.

pointythings · 08/06/2012 20:17

My DD2 needed night feeds until she was almost a year old. I was BF so no chance of DH doing any of them. At 4 months your DS is going through a growth spurt, and although the books say babies don't need night feeds after 6 months I'd take that with a barrowload of salt - DD2 would drain both sides fully in about 15 minutes, twice a night - definitely hunger, not comfort feeding.

Don't go by other people's stories of how wonderful their babies are - if it helps, 'sleeping through' at this age is defined as 'has one stretch of five hours or more between two feeds'.

When they start faffing about during night feeds (not taking more than a few sucks of bottle/spitting out nipple when milk lets down, which was my cue for night weaning DD2) then it's time to take (gentle) steps.

rubyslippers · 08/06/2012 20:18

My Dd was feeding 3 hourly day and night at that point so up at 7, 10, 1, 4 and up for the day at 7 pm

Night feeds are normal and very knackering !

They do pass - both mine were sleeping through at 6/7 months but lots of babies and indeed toddlers feed in the night until a year plus

Make the post of any rest time you can get

They're lying! My oldest had three feeds a night until 8 months and over three weeks, we gently dropped them all. Approx one hour of crying in total. She was ready to stop. And has slept through since. She's now 3.5. Of course, she got up at 5am until she was almost 2...

lola88 · 08/06/2012 20:22

i actually thought he slept well until i got all these oh mine slept 7-7 from 3 months i knew they were talking shite

He sleeps 6.45 - 7.30 and is up twice for 20 mins tops feel quite lucky again :)

Are you kidding? I would kill to be in your position! My DS is eight months and still feeds every two hours through the night. I dream of only being woken twice!

PoppyWearer · 08/06/2012 20:30

They're definitely lying. You get the odd freaky baby that does it, but they aren't as common as people think.

9mo is my DC2 and still up twice a night for bf. DC1 was night feeding until 1yo. Then we moved on to the next challenge.

Babylon1 · 08/06/2012 20:31

My dd1 went thru 12 hours regularly from 4 weeks old

My dd2 went thru 10-12 regularly from about 8 Mths

DS1 currently goes thru approx 6 hours between 10pm and 4am wakes for a feed and goes back off again. he's only 6 weeks but it does show how every baby is different. Smile

Chin up, won't be forever!

drcrab · 08/06/2012 20:33

My dd is 20 months... And she's still night feeding. And no it's not a stealth boast because I wish I was one of those 'oh my baby slept through from 6 weeks'?!!! Sad

My DS who is 4 slept through at 23 months.

PoppyWearer · 08/06/2012 20:34

This too shall pass
This too shall pass
This too shall pass

lola88 · 08/06/2012 20:39

i don't mind so much now i know you are all up too :)

was feeling a bit hard done by there

I think I would have been ecstatic with only two night wakings at 4 months! I have one friend whose baby slept through from very early on with the occasional glitch. All the others were waking several times a night for quite a few months. The baby who slept through was FF, though this doesn;t always help.

I'm also sorry to say that it can get worse at around four months, but it does get better again, honest.

DS1 was sleeping through by about 9m. DS2 woke up less than every two hours last night Sad. He's 7.5m and is showing no sign of sleeping through yet.

Your baby is normal, and you'll cope, honest!

justabigdisco · 08/06/2012 20:52

6mo feeding every 3h at night here.

VerityClinch · 08/06/2012 20:52

My 18 month old is still up on average twice a night.

His bug sister slept through consistently from 12 weeks.

When she was six months old we figured "this is easy, let's have another" and I was pregnant two weeks later.

Been paying for that decision ever fucking since Grin

Doingthedo · 08/06/2012 20:57

first night DS slept through he was 20months, you're not alone!

BlingLoving · 08/06/2012 21:02

Yup, lying. Most people say this if the baby sleeps through one night. 4 months is very young to be sleeping through and not needing a night feed. A number of my nct group claimed this but down the line it came out that this was not necessarily entirely true...!

Tee2072 · 08/06/2012 21:03

I won't make you hysterical by telling you how old my 3 on Monday son was when he began sleeping through consistently and reliably...

Co-sleeping saved my life. And my marriage. And my sanity!

DontstepontheMomeRaths · 08/06/2012 21:05

It was 9 months for my two DCs. One book I read said that at 9 months the brain patterns change and that causes them to sleep more consistently. don't tell that to the sleep thread on here with many many babies sleeping badly beyond that Wink

I feel your pain though. It is exhausting.

openerofjars · 08/06/2012 21:07

They just turn the baby monitor off. Wink

DS slept through from 10-20 weeks and then didn't have an unbroken night until he was 18mo. He sleeps beautifully now, though, at 3.5yo, and goes to bed well.

DD, who is 6 days old, only woke me up once last night, the little darling but this won't happen again this year or possibly the next if her brother is anything to go by.

I figure anything less than 3x is good going.

DontstepontheMomeRaths · 08/06/2012 21:09

OP you need some of Grin

lola88 · 08/06/2012 21:13

I don't like to co-sleep i'm a very light sleeper and can't sleep with all 3 of us in bed but i do usually bring him in at 5am or he's wide awake in his cot. He feeds twice a night but does have bad nights about 3/4 nights a week because he's teething so can be up a lot.

I am very very lucky in that my mum lives 5 mins away and can pop round for a cuppa 2 hour nap when he's been up a lot

I had a friend from my NCT group and we used to text each other when we got up in the night. sometimes it was nice as it reminded you that had had a good night compared to others and other times it just reminded you that you werent alone. sometime we were up at the same time and had a little joke. It made the feeds easier.

DS1 slept through from 6.30 - 1 then 1 - 7 from about 4 months, maybe sometimes up a bit earlier and i decided at 6 months, once he was eating 3 proper meals a day, that the night feeds were stopping.

lola88 · 08/06/2012 21:19

DontstepontheMomeRaths I am crying with laughter and i think DP might not survive his giggle fit lol

My ds aged 8 months still gets up twice a night on average for a feed. I switched from breast feeding to bottle about 8 weeks ago thinking this would help (it didn'tSad)

Sirzy · 08/06/2012 21:27

Ds was well over 1 when he stopped needing night feed, was over 2 before he slept though. I would take anyone saying their 4 month old 'sleeps through' with a pinch of salt, they are either exaggerating and very lucky and in for a shock in a few months when it changes
