Sitting unsupported

Had my first "should she be doing this by now?" today when my DMum said that she thought DD would be sitting up by now.

Confused

DD is 5mo (plus about three days). Is she late? I just figured she'd do it when she was able. She can sit up on my knee with my hands at her hips, roll tummy to back and has done a couple of back to tummy rolls. She has strong legs, can stand up for a bit with me just holding her hands, but can't sit on the floor without me sitting behind her.

Should I be encouraging it, and if so, how?

Oh, you'll get loads of this for years and years! Grin

No, she sounds completely fine. One of mine sat at 6 months, the other at 5 months.

A friend's baby wasn't sitting at 8 months, but was sitting, walking, running and jumping at 10 months. He literally got up off the floor put of the blue and walked!

My mum apparently sat unaided at 18 months. Hmm

Sounds normal to me. I treasure a posed photo of DS as a baby about that age and the satin sheet he's sitting on disguised my arm, propping him up at the back!! I think it was a few weeks later that he could sit up unaided. Teeth... none at the six month check, appeared a few weeks later. Crawling.... never mastered it. Walking... average to bone-idle. And I got fed up with the 'isn't he talking yet?' remarks as he went past age 2yo because, even though it wasn't recognisable as English, he never shut up.

Neither of mine sat up unsupported till 8 months. They were way too busy rolling and crawling to sit still. Some of their friends were earlier but were not moving as much.

DS was sitting at 5mo. DD has just started at 7mo. Sounds fine.

Would you advise sitting her with cushions around? She has a Bumbo, so sits happily in that and she likes her door bouncer which im sure helps with her core muscles.

Gosh it is a minefield.

every child is different my Dneice didn't sit until around 5 months my mum and gran kept saying how she should be doing it my DS is 16 weeks and has started sitting on my knee without support for a few mins and they say he shouldn't be doing it. She will do it when she's ready just ignore people

GnocchiNineDoors · 25/05/2012 09:09

I might get her a t-shirt printed with "Grows up automatically" on it Grin

DD didn't sit unsupported until 10 months. There was nothing wrong with her.

PotteringAlong · 25/05/2012 09:19

My DS is 5.5 months and started sitting unaided thus week - but only in the mornings as by the afternoon / evening he's too knackered :o

He can't roll over though...

Don't worry! All in their own time.

MirandaWest · 25/05/2012 09:25

DS was 7.5 months. DD was 6 months. They don't sit much now at 8 and 6 :)

GnocchiNineDoors · 25/05/2012 09:28

Well, I surrounded her with cushions on the floor this morning and sat her against them and she used her feet to drag herself back down to lying, so im taking that as a 'not yet Mam' Grin from her.

DD crawled before she could sit unsupported! She crawled at 7 months and sat a few weeks later.

Katy1368 · 27/05/2012 15:57

DD didn't sit unsupported until 9 months. She couldn't actually sit herself up independently if on her back until well over a year.

Honestly by the time they all get past about 2 you can't tell the difference and these worries seem a distant memory!
