Is this common practice for some people, or just plain wrong? Nappy related....

I have a friend who I don't see often, to visit with her 12 week old DS. Whilst she was with me, her DS had a wet nappy and she changed him. She took off his nappy, and said "Oh good, no poo so I don't need to wipe him." Shock

I always wipe my DS with a baby wipe when changing a wet nappy. Doesn't everyone??

I thought so! I mean, I know disposable nappies are very good nowadays but still... ewww, poor little man, sitting in all that pee all day!

turnigitonitshead · 23/05/2012 19:01

not if he has a good barrier applied, seems counter productive to wipe every time. I didnt wipe dd every time when using a good barrier.

GrimmaTheNome · 23/05/2012 19:02

I'd have thought wrong - I'd have thought he'd get nappy rash from sitting in urine. But then again, maybe he's sensitive to baby wipe fluid.

But surely you just reapply the barrier cream? I'm not knocking a good barrier cream. DD goes 12 hours at night in the same nappy, but... a bit of a freshen and then some new cream?

turnigitonitshead · 23/05/2012 19:03

I wouldnt have been using baby wipes at 12 weeks, I would wash with water and cotton wool, and apply a barrier, so that maybe why.

turnigitonitshead · 23/05/2012 19:04

I obviously would after 12 hours at night But not every wet nappy.

Magneto · 23/05/2012 19:05

I always wipe ds between nappy changes. Now we use reusable nappies and wipes you really have to otherwise the wee smell is very apparant. Reusuable wipes are the most useful thing I've ever bought though - no more worrying about whether ds is too sensitive for certain kinds of wipes because it's just water!

turnigitonitshead · 23/05/2012 19:05

but most 12 week babies dont go 12 hours at night in just the one nappy anyway.

Iggly · 23/05/2012 19:07

No wet wipes but yes a clean with water/flannel unless I'm caught out and in a rush eg changing on my knee in the car Grin

ouryve · 23/05/2012 19:08

We rarely wipe/d our boys if they've just had a pee, unless it's a big thuddy nappy.

mathanxiety · 23/05/2012 19:09

I never wiped after just a wet one. Nor did I ever use barrier cream unless there was a hint of a rash appearing; had one tube of ointment for five babies so not too many rashes either.

CervixWithASmiladon · 23/05/2012 19:12

I always did until he got bad nappy rash. The doctor told me not to wipe after every wee as removing, and reapplying, the barrier cream was more irritating than just leaving it through a couple of changes.

turnigitonitshead · 23/05/2012 19:12

I certainly would be less inclined to indulge in the stresses of changing and washing in the presence of a friend who later be judging what i was upto and later post on mumsnet Grin life is hard enough as it is with a 12 week baby.

Maisieskates · 23/05/2012 19:14

I use cotton wool pads and water (LO is 13mths) when nappy is dirty but not just for a wee. Only use barrier cream at night.

bonzo77 · 23/05/2012 19:24

I only wipe First thing when DS has had nappy on for 13 hours. And if he's pooed. No barrier cream, metanium if sore, so very rarely. Using boots disposables.

Lexiesgirl · 23/05/2012 19:26

Wow - first-time mum here, so this is an eye-opener! Maybe I'll stop wiping as much Grin

BackforGood · 23/05/2012 19:29

Well I would have wiped, but then I'm old, and a lot of things I did don't apply anymore Grin

Ilovedaintynuts · 23/05/2012 19:43

3 DCs and have NEVER used wipes after just a wet nappy.

No nappy rash with any of the children, apart fom the odd bit of redness after a toxic dump.

I do compulsively bath my DCs though, daily from birth.

Springforward · 23/05/2012 19:48

I wiped DS everytime. I wipe myself every time, after all Grin.

Lexiesgirl · 23/05/2012 19:52

Springforward - exactly, that's what I was thinking!

wasabipeanut · 23/05/2012 20:01

If their bottom is dry I wouldn't bother. Disposables do wick the moisture away a treat.

cakeismysaviour · 23/05/2012 20:01

Thanks for the replies! First time mum here too (but pregnant with DC2), I have always wiped and haven't had any problems with this, but as somebody said, all babies are different. I was just a bit surprised. :)

I have never wiped with a baby wipe if the baby is just wet. Never done and I've 3. I just let their bum air dry and put a new nappy on. I only use barrier cream if there's a rash starting to appear, not just incase.

BeachInsteadOfPlaguegroup · 23/05/2012 20:07

I've always wiped (no barrier cream), never had any problems with nappy rash.

goodygumdrops · 23/05/2012 20:25

I have always wiped using cotton wool and water. I am shocked that people don't! But then i've never thought about it properly ...
