Is this common practice for some people, or just plain wrong? Nappy related....

I have a friend who I don't see often, to visit with her 12 week old DS. Whilst she was with me, her DS had a wet nappy and she changed him. She took off his nappy, and said "Oh good, no poo so I don't need to wipe him." Shock

I always wipe my DS with a baby wipe when changing a wet nappy. Doesn't everyone??

I usually wipe but might not if in a hurry at a friend's. I only ever use cream if there's a hint of rash, which after the first fortnight was only ever if I used 2 or more disposables in a row.

Hm, surprised to find that not everyone wipes every time! I always have, and she's got a robust little bum so have rarely had nappy rash issues. But then we don't bath her every day, and she has previously gone several days without a poo, so if I never wiped her after a wee then her bum would be a bit on the manky side by the time a poo appeared.

I did most of the time but when older nit every time. Esp if out and about.

StealthPolarBear · 24/05/2012 14:36

I never used cream as standard, only if they needed it.

nickelbarapasaurus · 24/05/2012 14:38

i think it's gross.
they've been sitting in wee.
they should have the opportunity to be clean before they sit in wee again.
especially as wee is an irritant.

StealthPolarBear · 24/05/2012 14:40

Tbh with mine it was usually when I couldny decide whather to change or not but decided to - so somewhere between not changing them and changing them properly!

Floggingmolly · 24/05/2012 14:45

God, I always did, I'd have thought not wiping was far more likely to cause nappy rash than the other way round - I'm still not convinced Hmm
It seems rank not to.

Meglet · 24/05/2012 14:45

I always wiped with a baby wipe. Cotton wool was too much faff.

Only used cream when teething and they had nasty acidic poo.

mathanxiety · 24/05/2012 15:20

I don't see the point of having them cleaned off for perhaps two minutes until they're wet again. They are going to be sitting in their own pee until the next change unless you whip off the nappy every time. I would be more worried about the chemicals in the average wipe than pee.

EclecticShock · 24/05/2012 15:31

Agree, not when he has barrier cream, can irritate more.

Karoleann · 24/05/2012 19:53

No, never wiped any of my three unless the there's a poo. Nappies draw the moisture in so assumed there's no need. I'm not sure I've ever seen any of my friends do it either.

McKayz · 24/05/2012 19:59

I would have wiped after DS1 but not DS2.

JeanBodel · 24/05/2012 20:02

I wiped for about a week with my first child.

Never bothered since.

monkeymoma · 24/05/2012 20:04

I only wipe for poo with disposables
always have to wipe with reusables, the wee sits on the skin, but there's nothing to wipe with disposables, it's all sucked up!

monkeymoma · 24/05/2012 20:05

" I would be more worried about the chemicals in the average wipe than pee"

yup, wipes are very irritating on the skin
I have sensitive skin on my face and even "senstive" packet wipes sting!

BertieBotts · 24/05/2012 20:06

I did when DS was tiny. When he was older I only wiped for poos.

monkeymoma · 24/05/2012 20:07

think about it, nappies soak up moisture, toilet paper soak up moisture, I don't feel the need to wash my bits after every pee, I just soak up the moisture with toilet paper

NapaCab · 25/05/2012 02:43

Hmm, another standard of hygiene where I'm clearly falling down then (notches up more points on the Crap Mother of the Year award I'm currently in the running for... )

Anyway, I've never wiped after a wet nappy but I give DS a bath every evening and let him have some nappy-free time afterwards and he's never had a mark on his skin. I do use eco-nappies that are bleach- and chlorine-free though so maybe they're less irritating / smelly? I did notice when I used a standard commercial brand, his skin and the nappies were smellier.

lola88 · 25/05/2012 07:32

I always wipe don't use any cream and ds has never had any nappy rash.

Octaviapink · 25/05/2012 07:48

Nope - don't wipe for wees. No nappy rash here. As urine is sterile there's no real point in wiping. It's only when it's stale that it turns ammoniacal and given how well nappies wick moisture away there's no danger of them sitting in stale urine (unless they've been in a nappy for hours and hours and it's full. Lots of nappy rash is caused by allergies to baby lotions and to particular nappy brands (one HV I know says the first thing she tells people is not to use certain brands).

MummyLostInParenthood · 25/05/2012 12:14

I don't normally wipe unless there are any signs of poop. My baby has never had any nappy rash or problems down there. She is changed regularly and she is not smelly. Why should we go to the extra effort if it's not necessary? Any pee you clean will very quickly be replaced by fresh pee, no?

If you want to go the extra mile then of course it can't hurt, but it shouldn't be something to be judge-y of other Mums about. If the baby is healthy and happy, who cares?

AdventuresWithVoles · 25/05/2012 17:34

No creams or wipes as standard.
Not even daily baths
Did shower down as standard after dirty nappies, though.

Occasional rash, usually not. Best cure for rash = air time.
When I toured nurseries for DS I was struck by how many the children had their own pots of cream (we didn't). So tonnes of rash out there no matter what regime you follow, I guess.

SunnySeeker · 25/05/2012 17:45

We always wipe when changing a nappy.
Give a bath every second evening (unless hot and sweaty like today!)
As much nappy free time as possible but would like to do more.
A small layer of nappy cream at night, every night.

lurcherlover · 25/05/2012 22:37

I would always wipe but I don't use baby wipes - I use washable ones. I use cheeky wipes as I was given them as a present, but you could make your own just as easily.

I think it's a bit gross not wiping, really...I know we only wipe with dry paper, but we wear cloth underwear that's breathable. Babies are wearing either disposable plastic nappies or cloth ones with a plastic wrap - either way, not all that much air is getting to their nether regions. I think a quick wipe to freshen things is a good thing to do.
