Tips please for my constipated baby!

This is my 1st thread on here, but I really need tips on helping my 10 week old baby! He is only going on average once a week, & when he does go its an obscene amount bless him. He is more often than not uncomfortable & has a hard tummy, just finished baby massage class yesterday so I'll continue with that. My mum suggested fresh orange juice (small amount) but I wasnt sure because of it been acidic in his tummy. Suggestions welcome please. :)

is he formula or bfed? if bfed it is actually quite normal and he isnt consitpated if the poo is soft, he is only consitpated if its small hard balles/pellets of poo :)

If breastfed it's totally normal and nothing to worry about. If formula fed I'd suggest speaking to your health visitor or GP if you're concerned. As 5mad said, it's only a problem if the poo is obviously hard. If it's soft, don't worry.

I had this problem with my DS2, he ended up being given laxative (can't remember what it's called now - too early in the morning, but some suger solution) on prescription. I wouldn't give orange juice to a 10 week old baby but if you are breastfeedng then try drinkng it yourself. In fact I wouldn't give anything other water or milk to a 10 week old baby without advice from a medical professional. If he is breastfed it s normal for a baby to only poo once a week, but if it is hard then see your doctor.

Thank you for your comments, he is bottle fed & we have been giving him cow & gate cartons for a few weeks, which is more expensive but helps with his wind. His stools aren't hard & he doesn't struggle to let it out shall I say, but it is still distressing to see him with tummy ache & crying with been uncomfortable. I'm going to book him into docs next week & see what she suggests. Thanx again.

You may have to try a few different formulas. DD had awful constipation on SMA, gave her Lactulose from the drs which got things moving, then switched to Aptimal (sp?) and never had another problem. IME a bottle fed baby passes at least one stool a day.

Is it constipation or trapped wind? if its wind try giving INFACOL drops before each feed, it helped my DC's who found it hard to burp!
Also if grizzly, warm, deep baths help, (deep as in covering the belly, but not too deep obviously!!) it relaxes them and sometimes helps them have a poo (in the water!)
Hope it helps. x
