Can you change normal nappies standing up?

DS2 (21 months) is becoming really, really wriggly on the changing mat - no amount of nursery rhymes can stop the fighting. I'm thinking of ditching the mat and changing him standing up (he's perfectly happy putting on pull up nappies for swimming). If I do, do I need to invest in stupidly expensive Pull-ups or Little Walkers? Or can I do a normal nappy standing up? And can you successfully change a poo-ey nappy standing up? (These may sound like rather dim questions for a second-timer, but my first son would happily laze on the changing mat for hours - even fell asleep on it once Grin.)

I do a normal nappy standing up fasten one side then the other and go back and adjust the first one as it's normally squint.

Poo normally gets done standing in front of tv, DS surprisingly patient when peppa pig is on.
