Baby constipation nightmare

So I have posted about this before and am still having problems. My now 9 month old has been horribly constipated since he started weaning. We have tried lactulose, cutting out rice, banana, applesauce, bread etc. He has apricot puree every other morning and prune puree every other morning. He drinks loads of water, and we give him prune juice etc etc. He is still horribly constipated. Oh yes, and we have got through a whole packet of suppositories. We have tried a more BLW feeding approch too.

He has been given Movicol Pediatric this week and been on half a sachet a day. It doesn't seem to be making any difference at all. Just wondering whether anyone else has found half a sachet of Movicol to be ineffective (it has been 6 days)? Can I give him more or is there anything else I can try? The doctor said he felt backed up on monday and he has only done one small very hard poo since then.

Hi emoo, have you tried syrup of figs? It really helped my DD when she got constipated during potty training. Might be worth a try.

DD1 has been on movicol pediatric since about 1 year. IIRC she started on 2 sachets a day and then slowly went down to 1 sachet a day. Atm we are trying half for 2 days and then 1 for the next day. What I'm trying to say, is that she has always needed more than 1/2 sachet per day.

If I were you, I'd go up to 1 sachet and see if that helps. The nice thing about movicol is that it isn't habit forming, so if you take too much he will just poo a lot and you can cut down the movicol. No harm done. 6 days is a long time to be backed up.

It is horrible when they are constipated like that but the movicol really was our saviour - once we found the right dose.

Prune juice is magic stuff and can been given by oral syringe.

Fig syrup is a new one on me - will give it a try thanks.

camdancer - thanks for advice, have administered 1 sachet of Movicol for last two days and will see if that works, fingers crossed.
