Finishing breastfeeding, moods, starting the pill

Hi everyone,

I finished breastfeeding about five days ago. My daughter is 13 months old and we'd cut down to just one feed per day by the end of it.

I would like to start taking the pill again (Yasmin) and wondered if any of you have any advice?

Do you think I should wait a couple of weeks before starting it, to allow my body/hormones to balance?

Also, I'm feeling a little bit down at the moment which I reckon is probably post-breastfeeding hormones. Has anyone experienced this and how long did it last?

Thanks x

One more question - should I go to a family planning clinic to discuss this, or just resume taking my old pack of Yasmin (which is still within its use-by-date)?

I would talk to your GP - they may recommend a different pill for you. Have you been taking the mini-pill while breastfeeding?

Hi Octavia, thanks for your reply. We've just been using condoms while breastfeeding.

Does anyone have any other advice?

I am planning to just start taking the Yasmin again as I have some left. You have to wait for your next period to start. Wouldn't hurt to see your GP though

I took mini pill whilst breastfeeding ds2, I think you should see your GP anyway, you need your blood pressure before you start. I did feel a bit down when I stopped BF DS1 but it was because I was pregnant (and didn't know it because I didn't have periods!)

Yes, I felt down when stopping BF, and I know a friend said the same (I stopped quite suddenly at 4 months though, so it was a major change). I also had quite a lot of hair loss. I think it is normal for your hormones to go a bit mad! I don't remember it lasting long, although I do remember having a very down period a few months later, but I think that was a seperate issue (back in work, problems in work, still no sleep!) I think the post BF blues was only a week or 2. not sure about the pill as stayed on min-pill I had been on whilst BF, but I'd say talking to GP would be sensible.
