This is what we were told by a dermatologist when ds developed nappy rash during a hospital stay.

Clean with cotton wool and water only - a teeny bit of baby bath stuff only if absolutely necessary; no wipes.

Thoroughly dry the bottom and if baby will tolerate it, use a cool hairdryer to ensure he is dry.

Apply the prescribed cream. If baby is OK with the hairdryer use it again to make sure the cream has dried. Then plaster a coat of metanium (or similar) over the top to act as a barrier and prevent the prescribed cream being washed off when he wees.

Nappy free time when you can.

Oh, and if you have given the cream a few days to work and there is no change or it is worse, go back to the doctor

Bicarb of soda in the water you use for bum washing and bathing. A tsp in a bowl is enough. A tbsp in the bath. It is alkaline and helps neutralise the acidity that causes the sore bum. I used to have a spritzer spray I took about with me for bum changes out and about. Make sure bum is dry and then metanium put on nice and thin.
