Holding onto weight while breastfeeding

I have been breastfeeding for a year now and just don't seem to have lost very much of my baby weight. Everyone told me it would fall off with breastfeeding but I have found that regardless of how much or little I eat, my weight has just stayed the same! I am about to give up feeding so am hoping it will start to come off after that??

Anyone else experienced this??

Yes, every time (I have 4 kids)

Makes sense for your body to hold on to fat so you can still feed the baby if there is a famine.

God yes - the weight thing was a total myth for me - only lost some when I stopped. Happened both times!

And did the weight just fall off after you stopped or did you have to work at it? I still have a stone and a half to lose :-(

No, I did weight watchers - sorry!

I have bf all my 5! Although sometimes have managed to loose weight mostly find it so much easier once stopped bf altogether. Usually loose half stone within week when stop altogether, not just boobs disappearing but everything just seems to slim down. Also easier as not so Hungary! Smile

Just went :)

Yes! I EBF DD for 6 months and didn't see anything miraculously disappear at all. She is now 3 and it is still pretty much all there for everyone to see, I am afraid!

i lost about 1/2 stone quite quickly each time i stopped bfing
sadly the rest of the baby weight is still here with me.

I am breat feeding ans still a few lbs over what I was pre pregnancy. I am definitely not eating more as my appetite doesn't seem to have increased like I had expected.

Lost weight without trying when stopped bf each of my first two d c. Hoping for same with dd2...

TheNewShmoo · 09/05/2012 21:44

Me too. Tried dieting and serious gym sessions when DD was 6 months and I was STRICT, still nothing. Again at 8 months, still nothing. All around my bum, waist and thighs. All of a sudden in the last month though it has practically fallen off, coinciding with DD not wanting to feed hence supply almost gone. Tonight was the first time DD (10 months) had a bottle of formula before bed. :-( Dont worry, it will go.

Weight isn't going to drop off you unless you are restricting your diet and exercising regularly. Breastfeeding is no more effective at weight loss/body toning than twiddling your big toe.

I found it REALLY difficult to lose weight while breastfeeding. I stopped breastfeeding DS when I was 4 months pregnant with DD (she was stillborn so BFing wasn't an issue there), and once I was no longer pregnant or BFing, I lost the weight relatively easily with a bit of help from Weightwatchers, more to get out of the habit of eating as much as I needed to. I was ravenous when BFing.

lovechoc · 12/05/2012 16:31

I have lost two stone since I stopped breastfeeding!!! The only thing I did when I was breastfeeding was gain weight - it really is a total myth for some of us it seems!!

Banderchang · 12/05/2012 16:37

Agree with others, I tried to lose weight while BF but could never shift the last half stone. Then when BF finished (even though we had been down to 1 feed per day for over 6 months) the last half stone just dropped off. Wish I had known that then, as I would have stressed about it less!

lovechoc · 12/05/2012 17:30

I didn't even attempt to lose weight whilst breastfeeding - I just enjoyed this time to eat whatever I wanted and took weight loss seriously once I didn't have a toddler to BF.
