Getting preggers whilst breast feeding...?

Apart from the obvious advice, any tips? DD is 10 months old and we'd like to get pregnant by the end of the year, ideally December. I thought I'd be happy stopping the bfing in 2 months time when she hits 1, but actually wouldn't mind continuing until she self weans. The only problem with this is that the old period hasn't showed up at all since I gave birth to DD, and even though DD only feeds twice a day now I imagine they won't reappear until I stop bfing. What should I do?

My periods came back after 11 months, 7 months and 3 months Angry. I'd just give it a bit more time if you're happy to carry on bfing. Your periods will come back.

And it can happen anyway - apparently, a bit like any other contraception, BF-ing is not 100% guaranteed 'no accidents'...

and here's an active thread with examples Grin

We're having to be a bit Gina Ford with the regards to the timing of the second DC, so am a bit worried of having to leave it to luck... would much rather buy a pack of ovulation sticks and put the date in DH's dairy!!

My periods did come back a couple of months before we started trying, still bf DS1 in the evening. Got pregnant straight away with triplets so bf is definately not a contraceptive device Grin

I'm still bfing DD at 21mo and got a BFP last week. Due to teething pain she is also feeding like a new born at the moment. My periods came back around 9/10 months so yours could turn up soon.

Hmmm there does seem to be a pattern emerging with them showing up around this time (10 months), small sample though I know. Congrats on your pregnancy PogoBob!

And triplets BaileysLover- bfing definitely not a contraceptive device!!

I know a couple of people who got pregnant (accidentally) while breastfeeding.

DH was born 18 months after his big sister - the in-laws recently confessed to him that he was an accident (but a happy one), as they'd thought no contraception was needed while SIL was still being breastfed.

One of our neighbours also conceived her DD2 while still breastfeeding her DD1. DD1 was about 9 or 10 months at the time.

The average time for a woman's periods to come back is around the 14 month mark - which is when mine came back - but as you say, that will depend on how much you're feeding. But you don't have to give up totally - I'm pregnant and still feeding my 23 month old.
