Tips for switching Los from squash to water?

...just that really. Yeah, we have always known its not good, but now feel really bad giving my 2 dcs squash and both me and dh want them to drink water.
Sometimes they have watered down fresh juice, but mainly it's just heavily diluted squash.
When I give water to them, the older one 3.2 just moans don't like water mummy, and the younger one 19months, just throws it away.
I'm happy to perservere, put up with the moaning, but just wandered if anyone had done this and had any tips?
I do know it's our own fault for giving it to them in the first place. Hey ho you live and learn!

i would just give them water and ignore the whining they will get thirsty and drink eventually!

mine only have juice either fresh or concentrated really weak with meals, the rest of the time they drink water. dd is 16mths and has only had water so far, tho she may have sneaked a drink of juice at toddler group!

I agree with 5madthings. I just stopped buying it after a conversation with a student of mine with ADHD. His mum completely changed his diet including no artificial sweeteners & he admits he became a different boy. Some people don't see the connection but from my experience working in a behaviour unit & with my own kids, I have seen a dramatic difference.

You could try cooled herbal/fruit tea slightly sweetened with Xylitol - a totally natural sweetener which is good for teeth. You can buy it at supermarkets now, I know they sell it at waitrose. This is how I got my DD to start drinking water when she was very young.

All brilliant suggestions gratefully received, since DD2 is 11 and won't drink water.

Not giving her anything else is not an option, she often doesn't finish her drinks. Unless it's insanely hot she just isn't bothered. If waters all that's on offer she'd not drink for way longer than could possibly be wise.

If she forgets her school drink, she has nothing all day or scrounges off a friend.

She is unspeakably stubborn and old enough to her self a drink, which clearly doesn't help. I guess I could lock up everything except tea, coffee and milk, which see doesn't like, but it's a bit drastic.
Anyway she will drink milk shake and I'm sure she'd find something to sweeten the milk before she'd drink water.

interesting thread, watching with interest. 23mo ds is the same as startail's dd, if i stopped the v weak squash he just won't drink enough water. well, sometimes he does drink water but just not enough, so the weak squash is a way to up his fluids- which is important to avoid constipation etc etc...

never bought squash, never will,

just don't have it in the house, what are they going to do? moan a bit then get over it,

my children hate it,

Just keep a filter jug in the fridge, add a a few slice of lemon or lime to a glass if they need a bit of flavour,

but just think how much you will save them in dental bills when they are older.

My two boys drink very weak squash and now drink more water - although it was refused to start off with, I kept offering them water especially when out at the park when they are really thirsty. They both like drinking water from sports drinking bottles, I buy them in large packs and reuse them a few times. I think they like really cold water better. I have never tried with lemon but will try as it sounds like a good alternative.

They don't have a problem with teeth, they both have very good teeth and no issue with cavities at all (5 and 6 yo). They don't have sweets though except from party bags...
