Disabled me getting ds to school... How?

Just a quick question, as haven't a clue about schools:

I can't walk more than a few meters, ds is 2, but when it comes to schools for him, is there anything I can do to get him into a school very near me, so I can go sometimes, (although carer would do most days... As long as the council keep paying that is)

I've heard of some little ones not getting into closest schools & having 40 min bus rides/ multiple changes etc and that would mean I could never take him or talk to the teachers etc

Any ideas?

my dh i disabled cant walk any distance without crutches or wheelchair on really bad days, i work so he has to take dd to school (reception) we explained all this with medical evidence to an appeals panel last year, we were ingnored and basically told we are the one who are responsible for getting dd to school no matter what the medical need of the parent are, if it had been the medical needs of the child then that would be a different matter, albeit our dd does have a physical disbility upper limb, this too was ignored, she atteneded the school nursery was comfortable with her peers after some obvious upsetting hicups and all the staff knew her limitations, (she was the only one in her group that did not get a place) so it ment all new children all new questions and staff that knew nothing about her, but turned down and were told any upset she may incurr will soon settle down!! that was our appeal last year.......no the first thing you must check is if the criteria states anything about social and medical needs of the parent....as a few do......if not you can still appeal but go into it with your eyes wide open....we were given a lovely school but the one that is the furthest away on a main busy road and no parking, it is hell but we manage it

I'm disabled (recently) and when I received my top rate DLA mobility a couple of weeks back we were given door to door transport for school (our kids get a bus anyway due to specialist language provision) and the bus stop was changed so dd2 who is 8 can walk to it in full view of the house.

Don't know if it makes a difference that we're in Scotland, I suspect it probably does!

God this is worrying stuff, I am wondering about that now, does anyone know if as disabled parents do we need to ensure our child gets a certain place at a certain school and what we do to get it?

God there is a lot to learn coming my way clearly, my son is only 17 months but worth knowing how schools work for disabled parents. Also parents evenings, are all schools accessible now, I can't do stairs and want to go to parent evenings, do I need to check every school in area out ? Minefield comes to mind :(

I know this thread is quite old but hope it's ok to reply.

My DS is 8 now but when I was applying for primary school for him I put the nearest school as first choice (fortunately it's quite a modern building so very accessible). I also wrote a letter explaining why I needed him to go to the nearest school - so I could get him to/from school, both he and I would be able to participate fully in school life (parents evenings, after school clubs etc). And along with that I asked my neurologist to write a letter to confirm what I'd written. I then enclosed both letters with his school application.

I had to wait to see whether they'd accept this, which they did with no problems. This meant he had the highest priority for a school place (above children in care, siblings etc) so he had no problem getting in at all.

I was told that it was quite acceptable for my children (then 9 & 10), to get TWO buses to school on their own! I was furious!
When I explained to the assessor that this wasn't acceptable she told me I was being unreasonable and would have to get one of my family to take them if I couldn't, despite them all working and living a 20/30 minute drive away from us.
I was devastated that when I really needed help I was let down badly.

I am similar to you op in that I use a wheelchair and crutches, but I cant use my wheelchair for long distances ie more than 3 or 4 mins at a time as i have arthritus in my wrist (as well as being a lower limb amputee).
I got into a school ten minutes walk from my house, which is the closest school to me. There was a section on my school application form requesting a dr note if you were applying for a specific school based on your disability, i did not need this in this instance.
I use a mobility scooter to get my son back and for to school.

I used my electric wheelchair to take my DD to school, she used to stand on the back!
