Every time I change DS's nappy he screams as if I'm trying to kill him. Nothing will settle him down. Does the same for DH as well. I find it distressing, and it means that when we need to change him at night he completely wakes himself up and is really hard to settle. Also it means that the whole calming bath before bed thing doesn't work as he loves his bath but then gets freaked out again and worked up on the changing mat. It's just a cot top changer from Mothercare!
Have tried putting a towel or a muslin down on it so it's not cold, btu I'm at a loss...
Any ideas.....?

Put it on the floor for the moment, or maybe just change nappy on a towel on the floor. These things are often just phases that pass.

Put a towel on your knee and change him there.

I agree with putting it on the floor. We couldn't use the changing table with DS. I think it was a strange flailing in mid air feeling. He was better on a towel on the floor.
