Tips on teaching road safety

My DC are aged 6&7. We live in quite a rural area so we drive pretty much everywhere making opportunities for road safety lessons less available.

Today I saw them run across a road without looking and despite me SCREAMING at them they didn't stop (although my heart did). I have since given them a serious lecture about road safety, plus talking to them about roads, crossings, green cross code etc. I have sent them to their rooms with their pens etc and asked them each to write down and draw me a load of stuff about road safety. Tomorrow I am taking them into town where we will spend some time learning about road crossing in various situations.

This is, obviously, not the first time I have addressed the issue, but I get the impression that they need to be a lot more road savvy than they are. Unfortunately this isn't something they can learn via trial and error.

What tips do you have? Are there any online videos to help illustrate?

If you have similar aged children would you be able to trust them to cross a road safely?
