Talk to me about 4 month sleep regression

Hi

Ds is 16 weeks and since 8 wks we had only 3 nights disturbed sleep with him going from 8.30-6.30ish every night however he has woken up the last 3 nights at bang on 3.45!!
He takes most of a 8.5oz bottle then goes straight back to sleep could it be a growth spurt? He already is on 8.5 oz every 3 hrs in day and is over 17lbs so cant feed more in day. Planning on weaning early due to his size but heard about sleep regression at 4 months and wonder whether it is this? What is it and most importantly how long will it last?

Thanks

That still sounds like amazing sleep to me...!

PotteringAlong · 15/04/2012 19:16

Sorry, that was a bit abrupt (am 2 weeks into 4 month sleep regression with DS feeding every 2 hours all day and all night! :o)

It could be teeth? Sleep regression? Growth spurt? I'd just go with it and see what happens

That doesn't sound like regression tbh, that sounds blardy great.

I'm not sure I understand your logic behind weaning though.

Hi figgy, for my DS1 that's what his 4 month sleep regression was, previously sleeping for 10ish hours a night then started waking for a feed, then 2, usually going back to sleep straight after. He didn't sleep through again for quite a while, until he was on 3 meals a day and on formula, I stopped bf at 8 months. So long as they settle again after the feed, that's the main thing! They need the extra milk and then it becomes a juggling game with the introduction of solids.
My DS2 is 14 weeks and almost on 98th centile, he has only just started going longer at night and being bigger than his brother I put it down to needing the extra feeds to sustain his growth.
Weaning early doesn't always make a difference, its more of a case of going with the flow and seeing when baby is ready

I must admit that sounds good to me. At 4 months my Dd has gone from one night waking to every two hours sometimes!! Maybe a growth spurt, I hope it goes back to normal for you.

My DD was almost the same and to answer your question, the 4 month regression only lasted for about 3 days/nights.
However, my luck ran out at 6 months and she went from sleeping for 12 hours a night to waking every 2 hours. This lasted for about 3 weeks. It seems to have settled down now, but it has really knocked my confidence and I feel like I'm holding my breath every night now.
Good luck. Hopefully this is just a blip

I know I've been very lucky so far so is a massive shock when he suddenly starts waking again. He slept through last night again so fingers crossed it was just a blip as hed been dropping feeds last week

For us it happened like this:

11 weeks old, started to sleep through 11-12 hours. Fantastic.

16 weeks old, starts waking up about 3 times a night. Ok.

17 weeks old, waking hourly.

Now she's 22 weeks and waking up an average of 4 times each night.

What you have sounds amazing.

Figgygal · 16/04/2012 22:01

Is there any idea what causes it?
Is it linked to a growth spurt?

I hate the sleep regression. Ds used to sleep great, only waking once in the night, which was fine for me. then at 4 months his sleeping got worse, twice, 3 times. Now its every 2 hours. hes 13 months :( most babies get better so I wouldn't worry
