Who is right, me or dh?

Ds, 14m, got antibiotic eye drops on tues for conjunctivitis. Dh has Fridays off and when I got in tonight said he hadn't given the drops as his eyes looked ok. I was mad, going on at him About antibiotic resistance and finishing the course. Dh claims not to know what i am talking about, and that there is no course, the doctor told him just to give the drops as and when (?). Who is right and what do we do now?

well it depends... what were the dosing instructions?

Multifacetediguana · 30/03/2012 19:10

Well i am not sure as dh spoke to the doctor and on the bottle it just says 'take 4 times a day as directed' but I always thought a course of Anti bs was like 5 days and you had to finish it? Or am I ignorant? isn't that why we have Mrsa etc?

I'm not a doctor... However, I think finishing the course applies to antibiotics taken orally rather than ones applied topically. The ones that are applied (like antibiotic creams, drops etc) aren't absorbed in to the blood stream (I think) so the same rules don't apply as for oral antibiotics.

Whenever I've had antibiotic drops for conjunctivitis the dosing has been to take as directed until 48 hours after last symptoms have disappeared.

You are definitely right that with oral antibiotics you are supposed to finish the course even if you feel better already and it has something to do with resistance etc.

However, it might be different with externally applied antibiotics? I am not sure. I do know that in America you can buy topical antibiotic creams (maybe in UK too?) without a prescription so you wouldn't have to "finish the course" with them as there is no "course" but maybe they are BAD too.

I was told recently by my dr to stop eye drops a day after my dd eyes were ok hth

Beanbagz · 30/03/2012 19:15

I thought you had to keep going until a few days (4 maybe?) after they seemed clear. That was it stops it coming straight back.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 30/03/2012 19:16

That is exactly it head fairy until 48 hours after symptoms stop

That makes sure that all the bugs are gone before you stop.

5 days is the "course". We had to keep giving them even though ds's eyes had cleared before then.

TBH you can use warm boiled water with a drop of johnsons baby shampoo and clean the eyes with that, using clean cotton wool balls each time you wipe ie use each piece once, unless it's very bad.
