For anyone who's DD/DS named your 'bump' while you were pg......

What did you do when it came to choosing a 'real' name??

DD has called 'her' baby Dewey for months. Last night I was looking through a baby name book and when I told her I was looking for a name for the baby she got really upset because she had named it Dewey and couldn't understand why I was looking at other names (she's just turned 4).

How do we get out of this one??!!

So what is wrong with Dewey???

Hmm, tricky. I would keep Dewey as her special nickname for the baby but explain that the baby needs another name as well, that mummy and daddy get to choose. Most babies end up with funny nicknames anyway and I think Dewey is rather sweet.

Awwww - I like F&Z's idea.

Luckily DD is too young to name this bump, but she is convinced that it is a baby boy, which could cause issues if its not!

DD was 4 when I was pregnant with DS - from as soon as we told her I was pregnant she named "bump" Rainbow.

It was rather sweet and I thought (worried?) it would stick but as soon as DS was born hes never been called Rainbow (thankfully ! ).

I think we involved DD in choosing real names so she was probably aware that it was only a temporary nickname.

When she started crying about it I said that we would still call it Dewey like her and ds have nicknames but that it also needs a proper name like their proper names. Any time I've mentioned Dewey since she has growled at me!!! lol

My dd called bump bucket - she couldn't say one of the names we were considering properly (22 months). ds is now 9 months and still known as bucket or usually bucks. Someone at nursery asked me what his real name was. I quite wanted to use it as a middle name but got really bad reactions from people when I said it!

zephyrcat · 03/02/2006 12:40

Aww! I'm considering having Dewey as a middle name if it's a boy....

Our other problem is she is absolutely convinced it's a girl and for as much as we are trying to prepare her that they might say it's a boy tomorrow she won't have it!!

My bump was affectionately called peanut but I called the baby peanut as a joke after the birth and it was too weird. A bump is an abstract concept baby but when it's suddenly real and got a real name it's hard to relate the baby to the bump. Know what I mean? Or am I off my head today...

zephyrcat · 03/02/2006 14:26

lol no that makes sense - although dd is aware that there is a baby in there I think it's quite a surreal concept for her to really grasp until he'she makes an appearance - although we've got a 4D scan tomorrow so that will probably be the next thing to freak out DD!!!!

ds is 2 and when i was pg he called thebaby dolly all the way through. Luckily Ihad a DD and she now gets called dolly as her nickname your DD can do that too.

ernest · 04/02/2006 06:22

ds1 was casper, because that's exactly how he looked on the scan, so was referred to as casper all through - how's casper today, can't wait to see casper etc to the point he nearly ended up being called that for real as everyone was so used to it. thankfully not. ds2 chumpy. same as ds1 except no temptation to name him that for real! ds3 was schlumpfli. slightly more difficult, so only used by me & dh.

i think f&z's idea good too. sweet.
