This is something I keep seeing cropping up on MN and have never honestly heard of it before.

Am interested in what the bare bones of it are.

very simply- I'm sure someone else will be along to explain it better, the term comes from the title of a book by Alfi Kohn. It's basically the idea that punishments and rewards make children feel that your love is conditional. Parents influenced by this idea normally don't use time out, naughty step or reward charts but try to model appropriate behaviour instead, try to teach rather than punish by explaining why a certain behaviour might be undesirable, upsetting, impact on other people. Also it is preferred that children will be driven by intrinsic motivation to succeed, be helpful, aimable etc rather than by extrinsic rewards.
