My two DCs have birthdays this time of year and I really appreciate garden toys as it's coming up to that time of year Smile
Water/sand play station or a paddling pool?

Wooden train set? He won't work it out for some months, but can play with the trains in the meantime without the track, and will get years of play out of it. If you google them on the internet you will see they come in a lot of sizes and configurations, so you can choose what you want to spend, but make sure the brand you go for is compatible with Brio/Thomas (most of them are).

Some good story books that your DC enjoyed throughout their second year.

I think those toys that are like a figure (mouse, lion, penguin etc) on a long wooden stick that little ones can push along to make the feet go round are great. they work from ditto g or standing so last well from 1year upwards. You would probably find one on a traditional wooden toys website.

How about a baby walker or a ride on toy?

Twinkleinmyeye · 13/03/2012 19:37

Aquadoodle! Creativity without the mess. My DS loves his. He's 2 now but I can't see the attraction wearing off soon. It's so handy to have a portable "painting" mat...

Pound and roll/pounding bench
Ride on toy like a wheelybug
Push toy (on a stick)
Duplo or Megabloks

(all things DD got for birthday/Christmas, she's now 16 months)

DS's favourite first birthday present (last month) was Ernie Fire Engine.

He also got this for Christmas and plays with it every day.

Has he got the V-tech walker? We got that for DS at around 1. Or a percussion set? John Lewis do/did a lovely one.

Or books, you can never go wrong there. The Julia Donaldson ones for very young children such as One Mole Digging a Hole, Chocolate Moose for Greedy Goose and One Ted Falls Out of Bed are perfect for 1 year olds.

I had a similar problem with my nephews 1st birthday last Xmas. Tough to find something not already bought by a family member for Xmas the week before!

Settled on a caterpillar crawling tube for 9.99 and it was the most popular toy he got (preen preen). Still obsessed with it now. They camp a lot and it folds flat so it's perfect to provide a bit of outdoor fun during summer. And it's a toy that works well for sharing with friends because chasing each other though it makes it even better. Later on they can add a tent or something. For now it's permanently installed in the living room!

A Bobby bike. Quite small so it should work. Later he will be careening around on it. There are Bobby cars and a larger bike. German made. Expensive but just great.
