I am English speaking and DH is both english and Punjabi speaking. He always speaks to dd(10 mths old) in punjabi which she seems to understand. The problem is I am trying to learn punjabi aswell so that I dont get left out of the conversation when they talk or we go to visit relatives. How do other monolinguists manage when their children can speak a language you cant understand?

hmmm, not from personal experience, but i remember a colleague at work who spoke arabic which she had picked up from her kids.
i think its admirable that your dh is speaking in punjabi. our kids have ended up speaking only oenglish, and its all because of our own laziness, despite cgood initial intentions
