I don't know if it's the same today but when DS arrived in 2000 I was given a pack in the hospital that contained various free samples and adverts but also the application form for Child Benefit and something about registration. Good luck!

You wil get a pack at the hospital to explain, giving detals for the registry office. You make an appointment at the registry office to register the birth. If you're married to the father only one of you has to go, if you're unmarried you must both go if you want the father's name on the birth certificate (this also gives the father parental responsibility). You will be given a short certificate for free (which is enough to claim child benefit) or you can buy a long certificate (I think these were about £7).
