this bed would be perfect apart from it takes a continental mattress (bigger then a standard single)

Try the Great Trading Company or aspace. They're not cheap but think they're going to be along the lines you're looking for. Is Ikea any good? Or maybe that's a bit basic. Maybe John Lewis.
