World Book Day - 1st March - what to dress as for nursery?

2.5yo DD goes to nursery where children are dressing up for World Book Day on 1st March. I wondered if anyone has ideas for a character - preferably a children's character - that we could dress her as. I'm looking for an outfit we could make relatively easily at home, rather than a bought one.

Olivia Twist. Then you celebrate Dickens at the same time, which is a bonus!

Sophie from the Tiger who came to Tea: you just need some Harlequin pattern tights. Failing that, how about the Big bad mouse (buy a cheap hairband and attach some fake fur ears). If your DD is anything like either of mine, the costume will stay on for ooh, 3 minutes....

Princess Pearl - a 'normal' dress, a paper crown and a stethoscope? Doctor's kit/bag optional.

The witch from Room on the Broom - a hat, broom, cape maybe a toy cat, bird, frog etc.

Good ideas, thanks - might go with the mouse idea.

I once had a similar last minute fancy dress panic with an adult friend of mine. He was panicking with only 2 or 3 hours before a book themed fancy dress party.

Solution? Toy soldiers, string, baggy White shirt, khaki long shorts, White wooly socks and black shoes.

Little Princess - white shift dress (easy to make) and yellow crown (similarly).
