Cod has a potty training thread.
Not on it myself as ds finally got there at nearly four, but I think she says cold turkey on nappies.

I wouldn't put a nappy on him for going out - it can be confusing for them. I just took dd to the toilet every fifteen minutes (or every time we passed one!) when we went out for the first couple of weeks, until I got used to how long she was going between wees and how long she could hold on for. She got heartily sick of it in the end and told me in no uncertain terms that she would tell me when she needed a wee and she did.

Just make sure you know where all the public loos are, which shops have toilets in them, and be prepared to whip his pants off and let him pee into a drain if he needs to.
