low self esteem/confidence... possibly anxiety?

Hi, just hoping for a bit of advice really. My son is nearly 8 and would happily sit at home watching tv all day if i let him! He has some close friends who he plays with sometimes but he's not v. good at all with larger groups of children. He tends to shrink in to his shell if any child he doesn't know well comes on the scene.
I'd love to see him running around on a football field and he's been offered the chance to go football training with a friend - i'm just concerned he's gonna end up a quivering wreck on the side of the pitch!
So should i give him the push he might need and MAKE him go training every week, or just let him come when he's ready? My concern is if I leave him to his own devices he'll NEVER gain the skills/courage to socialise with new people properly? And if i make him go will it make any anxiety issues worse? (he really gets quite upset when I suggest the football)
Not sure if it's relevant but I'm a single mum and he's the only child. He has no contact with his dad.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
