Which game console (childrens’ laptop?) is best for 4yo DS?

As in the topic. I would not normally get a games console at this age, but we will be travelling on long haul flight and long road trip, and I think that would be a good idea to keep him occupied. However, I am complete novice in this and have no idea what?s on the market, apart from vague names like Nintendo DS or Mario or Leapfrog Computer? We would need something for basic games which DS could play on the plane or car trip.
Can anyone recommend where to start from, please?

DD has this one which went down really well, games and a bit of learning which she really enjoyed and she found it a lot easier to use than a DS.

My two eldest DS (6yrs and 4yrs) got leap pads for Christmas and I can highly recommend them.
Games are fun but also a little educational, you can also download music/films for them to watch plus they have a camera/camcorder on them which mine love using.
DS1 has had DS (gift from family member) which he hardly ever played with as even games for his age range involved too much reading.

Thank you fivegomadindorset and Haribojoe
Sorry to be daft but is Leapfrog Leapster and Leap pad the same thing? They sound similar, what is the difference?

I have never seen a leapad, but the explorer is more like a DS, that you slot games into (the madagascar one and toy story are excellent) and the leappad is more a computer style one?

fivegomadindorset · 04/01/2012 12:09

leapad here seems to me you can do more things on it.

Thanks again! One more question, do these things come with games or do you need to buy games separately?

I bought DDs separately, and a game card to downlaod some games from the website.

Leappad has a few games on it and you get 2 downloads free, then you can buy more apps online (bit like itunes).
