Babies & Swimming???

We're off to center parcs next week and we all love spending time in the swimming pool especially with our 3yr old dd1...

But we now have a beautiful 8 week old dd2... is she too young to be taken into the pool??

quick question as the finale of Lost is on!!!!!

its just that i remember when dd1 was little that my hv said I should wait til she had her first set of jabs???

they do "say" they "need" jabs first BUT my old charge had no jabs ever (dont belive in vaccines but thats anoterh story!)

anyway hes been swimming lots since 3 months old and been fine...

the counter arguement is you done catch any of the ilnesses you are vaccinated from from the water anyway, so WHY do they suggest you should be vaccinated first?

I would take them swimming as well,

(tho id definitely have a disposable swimming nappy UNDER a washable swimming nappy in case he does a poo!)

got a great deal only £170 for 2 bed...have you asked for an upgrade before? what are you asking for?

Well, we paid £149 for a 2 bed place....they are now £104 for a 2bed.

I rang today and said is there any chance of a free upgrade as you will be quiet next week and she said that it might be worth asking for tomorrow!

So I will.

Thought I might ask for something nearer to the pool or a bigger cabin or whatever they will give me really.

Gulp.

They say wait til after first jabs. No real justification for this as far as I am aware so you can take her whenever you want to!

tbh I would think she's likely to get tired very quickly (maybe after 10mins or so), and may get cold quickly too unless the pool is v warm.

i started taking ds when he was 7 weeks old, but be warned they do get cold really quick. the only thing i will say is that you shouldnt take her swimming the week she has her polo jabs as it is passed on through their wee and will be dangerous to any one who hasnt had their polo jabs and to the old.

Hi, just wanted to add that we took our DS to Eleveden when he was just under 3 months (a few weeks ago) and we took him in the water. He'd had his jabs already. Just to warn you, the water is not that warm and the poor little mite was shivering after about three minutes so we took him out and that was the end of that for the trip! Great place though - beautiful and very relaxing. If you can, get to La Sapiniere for dinner - amazing food and fantastic service! Have a wonderful time!

I'd only take her in for a few miutes at a time and we spend most of the time in the childrens area with dd1.
The rest of the time I'll put her in her car seat and let her nap... good chance to show off her new minki's and wee notions nappies tho...! lol

Aren't the polio jabs inactive versions now??

Anyway, allegedly the chlorine kills off pretty much everything your baby is not yet vaccinated against. Make sure you have a large fluffy towel handy to wrap her in immediately and keep it to 10 minutes at a time. I found those all-in-one sun protection surf suits invaluable as they make your baby less slippery!!

Oh, but remember that it can get hot poolside when the baby's not wet so make sure she doesn't over heat when napping in her carseat

Polio can be caught through swimming pools it is water bourne and not killed by the clorine in the swimming pool.

SD is right, the current polio vaccine is inactive - she can't pass on polio from it.

polio jab is now inactive so there is no longer even a teeny tiny risk of catching it through a pool (which I think was always more theoretical than actual anyway). My younger 2 haven't had any jabs and go swimming every week. Only thing to watch with a baby is that they can get cold easily so keep the session short (unless you have access to a hydrotherapy pool!)

Not that it matters given the new jabs but from this website about "water disinfetion"... "Chlorine is effective against E. coli bacteria and Polio virus."

thanks for your help ladies...I'll just take her in for a few mins at a time and once she's dry I'll just sit her in a nappy so that she's not too hot.
the pool area at center arcs has always been clean when we've been there so I've no concerns about that and this way dd1 gets to have fun playing in the pool without on of us sitting on the sidelines watching dd2
