Is 5 too young to get ears pierced?

I have always said that my girls could get their ears pierced when they understand that it will be a bit sore and they can handle it but my eldest girl has been asking for about 8 months now ( since just before she turned 5) I put her off for as long as I could because I wanted to make sure she understands what she is doing. But I still can't help thinking if she is a bit young? Opinions please?

Thanks for all the replies, had a chat with DD and talked about how she might be a bit young to look after the earrings and asked her was there anything she wanted more than getting her ears pierced and she said she wanted to do more swimming lessons (she finished a course of lessons today) so I told her I would let her do more lessons if we forgot about ear piercing for a while and she agreed, so happy faces all round! I am relaxed about it, I don't want to set any minimum age but im going with my gut instinct that she's not ready and I'm happy that I was able to put her off for another while!

Excellent - much more age-appropriate! Smile

Definitely as far as I'm concerned- too grown up!

I remember having my ears pierced and my mum told me I was 6 years old. I remember it well because it really really hhurt, and they got infected and having them cleaned every day really hurt too. It's not worth it at all. It's painful.

I think this is cultural. Some cultures pierce their daughters ears at a few months old.

Her in UK, for my children, I'm thinking about....maybe 20. Grin

Glad you got a good plan together Op

I suppose its nothing like as bad as some of the things done to daughters under the guise of 'cultural practices' - doesn't make it OK IMO.

Yes far too young

Mine have been pierced for as long as I can remember. My mum just decided to get mine and my younger sister done t the same time. She is 4 years younger than me! On the upside I don't remember the pain and I've never had a problem with mine. If I had a DD I wouldn't let her get it done until she was in secondary school though. Each to their own though!

Yes, it will look horrible!
