Window safety for 3yr old

This spring/summer will be first time DD is in a bed. I am concerned that she may climb onto window sill and fall out of the window when alone in her room. She is three and sensible and not particularly lively, but keep having what if worries. What precautions if any do you take? Would a 3 year old try to climb out or do they have a sense of safety? In summer she will have to sleep with window open as it can be very hot.

I am afraid I don't have any advice but i am asking myself the same question re DS who will be 2.5 in summer. He is very lively and into climbing everywhere.

You can buy catches that only allow it to open a couple of inches

Definately use the safety catches you can buy . A little boy of someone I know died at 2 years old after falling out of a window it's simply not worth the risk.

I'm replacing the windows in ds's room as I just don't think they are safe - they swivel open so I don't think catches would be much help for us. It's also on the second floor, above a conservatory... if you have normal casement or sash windows I would have thought catches would be fine.

you can get catches that go on that type of window and lock in place - i had them once a few years ago so i could leave windows open in daytime without anyone breaking in.

Just had another thought what about a fan instead of leaving window open?

Look at the catches they sell in Mothercare. IME a fan is insufficient to keep a room cool. Especially if the child is having naps in a south facing room as in our case.

you could get one of those portable air conditioners in his/her room. Our windows are locked shut in the summer, and anyone who unlocks them get a few unpleasant words from me. It often amazes me that I am the only person in the house that freaks out over open windows and toddlers / small children. It scares the Hell out of me. Glad to read I'm not the only one.

We are having double glazed replacement windows and the supplier for an extra £20 per window can fit a catch which means parent can ensure window only opens slightly but catch can be released in an emergency to open fully.

My childrens windows are locked all year, my son is autistic and he thinks he can fly.

Our old house had the catches that you can realease in an emergency, ds1 discovered he could get them off.
