Thanks to a woman I will never know for making a decision that changed my life

today is my DS 2nd birthday - but our first birthday with him. He came into our lives in June when we flew to Russia to collect him from a children's home where he had been left at birth. It took 3.5 years to adopt him but every moment of stress and pain was worth it. Today his birth mother is on my mind. I can only imagine that it must be a sad day for her knowing her DS isn't with her and not knowing where or how he is. She was unable to give him the basics he needed - a home and a family so she made the decision to give him away in the hopes he would have a chance in life. Having only been his mother for 6 months I can't imagine a day without him let alone a lifetime. I wish I could thank her for making such a hard decision - for setting into motion the events that brought him to us. I wish she could know how amazing and funny and loving her little boy is and that he will always know that the reason she gave him up was because she loved him. And I wish she could know that because of her I am a mummy. She will never know how amazing I think she is and she will never know how amazing her son is but I hope by posting this that maybe the happiness we feel at having our DS son in our lives will spread a little and maybe some of it will reach her. Sorry to wax philosophical but I needed to share this feeling with other mums who will understand.

How lovely.
I flwe back from Russia (where we lived at the time) the week after 9/11 with my baby and shared the aisle with a couple who had just left Russia with their adopted baby and were flying back to New York city where they lived..

What a turmoild of emotions they must have been feeling.

Happy Birthday to your little one, Happy christmas to a very special family. Enjoy each other.
I am a strong believer that if you put the energy and the thoughts out there, they will find their way in some form to who they are meant for, what a lovely thing to do and thanks for sharing with us.

My DH is adopted. I sometimes think about his mum, and how she felt knowing that she wasn't able to look after him. He had a wonderful childhood with his adoptive parents, and I suspect your DS does too. Happy birthday! xx

what a beautiful post... I couldn't read and run. It made me cry... What a lucky little boy to have such a loving mum, and lucky you for finding him. I have been to orphanages in Russia and I know how difficult the process is. I have such admiration for you. Merry Christmas!! And happy birthday to your DS.

What a lovely post :)

Is there anyway you can get a letter or some photos to her?

It is sad for his mother that our world is so screwed up that she had to give her child up because she couldn't afford to keep him, while millions/billions are spent on daft things :(

However, he has a lovely lovely family now and I'm sure he will be a very happy little boy x
