Is getting my baby to stand a bad thing?

My DD is 8 weeks old and very strong. I stood her up on my lap yesterday while holding her and talking to her as she seemed to like it. (not something I had done much before) But my DH said its bad for her as her legs aren't developed and still bowed. Is he right? As I hadn't herd this before
Thanks!

Your DH is talking utter rubbish :)

It's an old-wives tale, probably to explain children developing genuine leg problems from lack of calcium and vitamin D. Tell him not to worry about it, you won't be damaging her legs by letting her "stand" like this.

Tis really good for her muscles

Now, my HV told me off for allowing a 3 month old Ds to do this because his bones are still soft and 'you'll make him bow legged' so I stopped.

Kayzr · 18/11/2011 18:30

Like Solo I was told by HV not to let DS1 do this.

billgrangersrisotto · 18/11/2011 18:33

Absolute crap. If she likes it, it will do NO harm. It's not like you're doing it for hours on end, is it?!

BertieBotts · 18/11/2011 18:38

It's an old wives tale. Doesn't necessarily mean they will be an early walker though.

oopslateagain · 18/11/2011 18:39

My DD loved to do this from a very young age, I would hold her up and support her and she would use her legs to 'bounce' on my lap, she would giggle like mad when she did it.

Of course I was holding most of her weight, but she was definitely supporting herself a bit. Probably from around 8-10 weeks old. She's 13 now and her legs are still nice and straight so it hasn't done her any harm! Grin

I asked HVs and all said was ok and bow legged thing an old wives tale and it was good physio.

Both my DC have been keen to do this. With my second I've not encouraged it as much as first was walking at 10 mths and I'm on nooooo rush this time Smile

My HV told me not to, too.

In the Wonder Weeks book it suggests doing 'standing up' as a good game to play with babies of that age because it helps them neurologically with learning how their physical body is placed in the world (or something)! Also doing 'sit ups' with them in the same manner

Well that's as may be, but mine is usually spot on with information and advice.

4madboys · 19/11/2011 11:24

all 5 of mine have LOVED to do this from an early age, my mil commented on it but i still did it with them, they are fine and no bow legs!

my hv has never said anything about it, infact at the 6wk check the dr did it with them and was impressed with their strength, its fine :)
