Bonfire night with a baby

So what does everyone else do? Is it bad to take babies out in cold and dark to watch fireworks? I have ds 1yo and am wondering if I can ask my pals to start their bonfire early, say 5pm, wrap ds up warmly, feed him next to the fire and watch some fireworks before bed. Will the loud bangs scare him? He's not the nervous type usually.

You need ear defenders - the bangs may or may not scare him, but they could damage his ears - and he is far more likely to enjoy the fireworks with ear defenders.

I'm sure he'll be fine, as long as you're not too close to the bangs. Mine have always enjoyed it from a young age.

I'm planning on taking my 3 month old twins in slings this year!

Are you anywhere near Bristol? The zoo do a 'bangless fireworks night' and it's excellent for kids. I and friends have been with our DDs for the last couple of years and are planning to take the next set this year. It's not actually silent, but pretty close.

we put ear defenders on our then 9 mo last year and he loved them - taking him to the school fireworks this year - we kept him up late as it was a one off

Thanks guys, ear defenders a good idea I will have trouble getting him to keep them on though! Will take a look at link. I just wanted to see if taking a baby to bonfire was something other people do.

We just used my ear muffs for our DS - Keeps the noise out, warm and don't cost a bomb!

TBH he just got bored so don't be surprised if they just aren't bothered/don't notice them etc

Just make sure there is somewhere you can go if they don't like them - I know round here they go on for such a long time before and after bonfire night (they have already started) so if they get scared by them too quickly you'll be stuck!

i have just gotten back from my 8 y/o DSD's school firework festival. I took my 18 month old DD with us. She coped with the fireworks really well. A couple of the bigger bangs shocked her but i was holding her at the time and with a little encouragement from me, she went on to enjoy it.

Ear defenders never occurred to me .
