failing an OU exam

I have just sat MS221 and got my timings all wrong with the result that I barely finished 1/2 the paper.
I have resigned myself to failing the exam.
I have already contacted the OU and have been told the resits are next April
Can someone help with the following

  1. Is there a cap on marks for a resit?
  2. What is the effect on your eventual degree garde if you get a level 4 pass (30 point level 2 course)

Argh!!!!

I would try not to panic - you may well have done better than you think. I don't know if there is a cap on resit marks - it will depend on your continual assessment marks I suspect but I do know that your final mark will depend on an overall formula taking all your modules into account - ie one result will not be that important. It may be an idea to think about timings though as when you retake you will have to work twice as fast so you will need to practice doing questions quickly.

If the caps for resits are the same for all exams it's above 15% but below 40%. If you get 41% you won't be able to resit - but check if this is the same for your course it was for mine. Good luck Smile

Hi angelfire. Dont panic, even if you have passed by a small amount, even though it isn't brilliant, its still a pass at the end of the day, and you have your level 3 courses to bump up your overall grades.

I have my exam tomorrow and im not confident at all about it, especially as its my final exam and the last chance i have to bump my overall degree score up. im not confident about passing, but if i do, i doubt it would be a good pass so im kind of hoping for either a good one or a fail so i can resit in April. If i get a level 4 pass (level 3 course) then it will be terrible for my overall grade. Im just hoping for lucky questions!

I resat one of my level 2 exams a couple of years ago as i failed the first one, it wasn't all that bad, just made me try harder!
ive not done brilliantly all the way through my courses as ive struggled doing it alone not being able to go to a single tutorial, but the way i feel now i just want it over and done with.

You have a few months before you get your results so try not to think about it anymore for now. whats done is done so just try not to worry about it until you find out what your results are Smile

Yes, I think you have to fail to be able to resit. Can't resit to bump up a low pass. But at only 30 points, it's not a significant proportion of all your scores so you still have lots of chances to not let it influence your overall score too much Play about the predictor thing (if you can follow the explanations) and you'll see all is not lost. Is it just that fear after and exam when you remember what you didn't write rather than what you did?

Thank you to everyone who posted here - I have really appreciated all your comments.
I have calmed down a lot over the last week but still feel that pointswise there is no way I could pass because I simply did not answer enough questions. However another way of looking at it is this

It was better it happened now than in my final year
The resits are a way of going over what I thought i knew
It can only get better

So I have signed up for the next module - M208 - starts in Jan 2012

I have spoken to the OU - there is no cap on resits (I think I may have confused you with my earlier post - I meant is there a cap on my resit mark that howe. There is no cap - it is as if you are sitting the exam for the first time and looking at the course forum it seem s that there are quite a few people who have deferred the exam.

So onwards and upwards etc!

Thanks for the posts and good luck everyone

After all that I did pass - just - 43
which gives me an overall pass of level 4
which is pretty rubbish
but my tutor has told me not to worry because of all the results this is (points wise) the least significant
as a rough rule of thumb they double all your level 3 points and then add them to your level 2 points
and as this is a 30 point level 2 course it is (points wise) the least important

and breathe.....

but I just wanted to come back and let you know (if anyone is interested - LOL)

and say thanks again for the posts and support
