Is it by phonics? Seems to me that this would be much easier in spanish than english as far less exceptions. Can anyone suggest any spanish resources?

Thanks

I taught my son by going over the words and pointing with the finger at each sylable. So you say, B + A make BA. (La "be" con la "a" es "ba") and so on. It came on very quickly. He knew how to read in English, so sometime he still makes mistakes and writes "th" instead of "z", but it is generally ok.
