OMG - DD has tonight read 2 full books right through!

DD(7) is a VERY reluctant reader - can do it but gets easily frustrated and gives up if she finds a word difficult. However, here is a tip for all those with a similar problem - offer to act out the book as DC reads it out loud. I spent this evening being Little Miss Splendid, Mr Happy and various other Mr People characters complete with hats and various other props. I am knackered but, I will repeat, DD has read TWO WHOLE BOOKS RIGHT THROUGH!!!

Must have been something in the stars tonight! My DD, same age, same feeling towards reading and today has read 35 pages of the Little Bear ( Maurice Sendak) book AND a whole Ladybird read-it-yourself Hansel & Gretel

Wonderful, wonderful to see her reading and enjoying it so much :o so I know how you must feel. Good tip though about the acting - you must be exhausted!

Oh blimey, you are on a higher parenting plane than me, I seriously hate reading aloud, so it takes me all my willpower to do that.

Luckily dd was very good with reading and conveniently taught herself , my ds1 though will require actual effort, bollocks.

Very good and imaginative technique, well done your dd. I bet you bake cakes and do crafts too though, sorry for the assumptions, but I'm so sick of them by the end of the day, to do anything with gusto would require uber parenting to me .

Betterwhenthesunshines, it's great isn't it! I love books so assumed that DD would be the same How old is your DD? I have been hoping the readiing thing would just kick in at some point but it didn't seem to be happening.
Nihilistic, LOL at 'higher parenting plane' By the time we get in from work/after school the last thing I feel like doing is baking/crafts etc (although we have been known to knock up the odd sponge cake)

There have been so many tears, tantrums, throwing of books down, storming off (both me and dd) that I really was a loss on how to get DD to read more. If it takes me wearing a few silly hats, waving magic wands about and using various cuddly toys as props then so be it

My DD is 6yrs and 9months. Like you I just assumed the reading would happen like it had with my son, but she was never interested in even looking at books on her own. Quite happy for bedtime stories to be read to her, but never followed the words at all. Last year at school was very hard for her as she was very aware that others were racing ahead and she was still finding it very tricky. And, my gosh, it's been a learning curve for me - thank god for all the good websites etc because some of these phonic rules seem crazy until you really understand the whole system. Me too with the tears and tantrums . It's easy to be supportive when they get it, but not so easy when they are throwing wild guesses, trying to find the answer on the ceiling and generally not even looking at the right word!
