DD is constipated and currently screaming the place down, I've tried sugar water but she wont drink it. Anyone at all got any suggestions? Can I give her prune juice? She's 6.5months.

i gave ds peeled bits of prune that had been soaked in water (you could blend it maybe?) really helped

gossifairyonthexmastree · 06/12/2005 16:40

also a bath and a massage of the tummy area

I'd go sparingly on the prune juice - dilute it. You don't want it to have too strong an effect.

Laying your baby on their back and "bicycling" the legs is also meant to help.

blend prunes with a little rice pudding. Tastes lovely and helps them go.

Ironmaiden · 06/12/2005 16:44

I've managed to calm her down, gonna go and buy prunes, anyone know if I need dried or tinned?

i used tinned with rice pudding. Rememebr to stoen them first before pureeing, I forgot once.

gossifairyonthexmastree · 06/12/2005 16:46

i think either will do, i use dried and soak them but i guess the tinned ones wouldn't need soaking???

Thank you!

Would she take a bottle of warm water?

Ironmaiden · 06/12/2005 17:50

Just given her a bowl of rice pudding with prunes, she seemed to like it well enough but is still straining and crying. 2nd time this has happened now!!! 1st time we gave her water but she refuses it now...

Someone on here recently mentioned massaging the anus with a little olive oil. That's meant to help. And the bicycling legs thing.
Would probably have a more rapid effect that waiting for prunes to be digested.

I was always told give cooled boiled water with a teaspoon of brown sugar. Worked with ds at that age.

Organix do a nice Prune and Apple Porridge which keeps DD regular.

DO YOU KNOW WHY BABY IS CONSTIPATED? HAS SHE BEEN ON ANY MEDICATION RECENTLY OR HAVING CALPOL AS THESE CAN BE MAJOR CAUSES OF IT AS I HAVE JUST FOUND OUT WITH MY TWO AND NOTHING I GAVE THEM WORKED, NOT ORANGE OR PRUNE OR SUGARED WATERED SO WENT TO DOC'S WHO TOLD ME IT NEEDED TREATING AT THE FIRST SIGN WITH SENNA AND LACTULOSE AS IT VERY RARELY COULD BE RECTIFIED WITH DIET AND IT WORKED IMMEDIATELY YOU COULD ALMOST SEE THE RELIEF IN THEIR LITTLE FACES!

Eaney · 06/12/2005 20:27

I got really constipated due to high doses of codeine and was prescribed strong laxatixes to take daily. They didn't really work.

Prune Juice worked too well. It worked so well I couldn't take it any more. My Doc told me that to some people it can be more potent than any laxative and can cause a lot of griping. That's why I would be cautious about giving to a baby but it's is probably worth a try to see how your baby responds.
